No. 25 is me, Leslie Buck.
I recall that Frank Flint was friends with a guy called Tony Matthews. They were into drape jackets at the time. Also Brian Stepney had a drape and I remember one Saturday in WH Smiths in Basildon when they were listening to ‘Rip it Up’ in one of the booths, long after the record was a hit. By that time The Ronettes were in the chart so I guess the rockers hadn’t moved on.
Hi Richard. I lived down Martingale Avenue as did Frank Flint. He still lives there. You are right about Tony Matthews, he still lives locally. I have not heard anything about Brian Stepney.
Chris Hudspeth is not in the 1958 Autumn Term photo because he came to LHR during the following school terms. Also Bobby Bonnett is identified as number 5 above by Patsy Mott.
Yo Rich, Tony Matthews is no.18 page 11. I have scanned, searched, examined all pages and can’t find Frank Flint either. I would have expected to find him not far from Tony as they were inseparable even after having left school. Guess Fankie was playing hookie? Rockers didn’t have the same urgency as Mods to move on what with fashions and dance moves changing every week. Great days and the Ronettes great sounds.
There were several pupils absent on the day the photo was taken including at least two from my class. There are still many ‘rockers’ around these days. We went to see Marty Wilde at Towngate Theatre last week. There were several in the audience – men of our generation with quiffs and DAs (those that still have some hair left that is). The music is the essence and Marty can still produce its magic even though he is 76. His group ‘The Wildcats’ were also as brilliant as ever – they had us standing up and ‘rockin’.
Hi Donald. I cannot see Frankie Flint. He still lives in Martingale Avenue. We were good mates. Alan Webster also lived in the Avenue.
Couple more missing names: Frankie Flint & David Church. Just the names but they must be in there somewhere?
Yet another missing name, this time a girl Janice Marlborough. She lived at Dunton Caravan Park which I remember vividly as I walked her home one time (my first abortive attempt to be a Casanova). We walked for what seemed miles, all the while getting further away from my home. Along narrow concrete paths no more than a foot wide and these were the good bits. We finally arrived at her place, said “see you tomorrow” and then came the hard bit, finding my way back to continue my normal journey home. On arriving home, very late, I told Mum I’d been kept in at school for being naughty – she had no trouble believing that! Didn’t bother with girls for a long time after that.
Can’t help with the identification, but maybe it will trigger someone to recall. Raymond Broom, Geoffrey Schroder, Bobby Bonnet, John Holloway, Christopher Hudspeth just a few names that appear to be missing. Can’t identify them in the photos, can you?
No. 9 is my brother-in-law Edward (Ted) Markin.
Hi Nina you are right Mick had a sister called Gwen, I can remember they lived in a bungalow right in the sticks, thanks.
Editor: The Mobley family lived in a bungalow called ‘Joyville’ on Bourne Avenue while it was still unmade.
Peter Griffiths was not at the school in 1958, he started in 1959 and was in my classes through to 1964. I can see the likeness though, perhaps a brother?
No 42 is Peter Collison
I hadn’t heard of the spinney, so checked in the Electoral Register and found that Gwen and Mick Mobley lived with their parents in a bungalow called ‘Joyville’, on the unmade road ‘Bourne Avenue’ which was situated at the far north of Devonshire Road. Bourne Avenue was ‘made-up’ during the sixties.
I think 52 could be Peter Grithis [not sure of spelling]
Thanks Alan. Mick Mobley’s sister was Gwen. She was in the same year as me and appears on page 3, No. 57. Cheers.
No 6 Nigel Flashman rip
Hi Linda; 15 is my cousin Ray Cooper, and he is cousins with Janet and Colin Markin, Regards
Hi Nina; number 44 is Mick Mobley you are right he had a nickname of Jonah he lived in the spinney which was right up Durham Road. I think he had a sister I do not no her name.
Editor: The Mobley family lived in a bungalow called ‘Joyville’ on Bourne Avenue while it was still unmade.
Hi Linda no 15 is Raymond Cooper, and he did have a elder brother Gary Alan.
No 40 on page 12 is shown as Steven White and I still think 15 on this page is one of the COOPER brothers – I think this is Raymond and he had a brother Gary. As mentioned above they were cousins of Colin & Janet Markham
Could No 7 possibly be Alan Newton?
No. 44. Nickname ‘Jonah’. I can’t recall his real name.
With the Olympics going on now I cast my mind back to those sports days in LHR where we were just as keen then on our own heroes in our school.
In July 1959 I can recall the greatest sports day in all my time at the school. There was one particular duel between Terry Venner and Alan Castle, it may have been the mile or one of the other fairly long distance races. I think Alan came out the winner but Terry really looked the part, a tall guy who we as first years looked up to. A happy day going well into the evening. Brilliant times.
I was at the Excel Centre this week to see another of my favourite Olympic events, table tennis, took me back to those Laindon youth club evenings learning that game and becoming really good at it, but those guys doing it now are awesome.
Hi Nina, re number 15 you said Stephen White. I don’t think it is him because he was dark and in my year at school (older!!!). Incidentally Steve was at Ken Page’s reunion at Manor Mission and we had quite a chat with him. He must be reading this so perhaps he will confirm?? (Got to say the lovely black hair is now a lovely silver – still thick!).
Hi Andrea. I recognise No 15 but maybe the wrong name came to my mind. Unless there is more than one with that name of course. Hopefully we will eventually find out for sure. Best wishes.
No 15. Steven White?
Roger Wicking still @ 1957 Family Home in Basildon. Enjoyed putting sugar in Seaman’s noddy bike phut!
28 Geoffrey Cochrane
No. 15 I think this may be one of the Cooper Brothers possibly Gary – When we first moved to Laindon we lived in Devonshire Rd and they lived next door. They were cousins of Colin Markham shown identified at 26 on Page 9 – Colin also had a sister Janet Markham but I haven’t found her yet amongst the names/photos.
11 Alan Davies, 13 Eric Chapple
3 is Alan Marchant (my brother)
No 39 is Kelvin Higgs.
I still have both original photos and one of the cardboard tubes [1958] they were priced at 4 bob each 20p in your money now,we certainly werent wealthy but considered that these momentos were well worth the money at the time. I have cherished mine over the past fifty odd years and my wife has finally mounted them in a class case for me, they have pride of place in my computer room and Ive reproduced them for Josie Morris [Bowen] and Chrissy Hutchins [Oliver]. Regards to you all, Ken Page, Victoria Australia.
Just a footnote on this photo. If I am correct, I was late getting back from lunch that day in October 1958, I remember joining Keith English and getting into a higher location than most of the first year children who were mainly down on the ground and already in position. I can clearly recall the photographer taking the shot and the sense of occasion with all the school present, fantastic. I never did get a copy of the original photo but I remember they were expensive and came in a cardboard tube. My brother Rob was born in December 1958 so I imagine my parents were careful in spending at the time, already having the expense of myself and brother Phil and a brand new house. Nevertheless, brilliant times!!
