Langdon Hills - A-H

August 2014 was the one hundred year anniversary of the beginning of the Great War or the First World War as it became known. With colleagues, I have been researching those heroes who had a connection to the district and lost their lives in this devastating war.

As you can see, there are some unanswered questions, if anybody can throw some light on these queries I would be pleased to hear from you.

Harold Edwin Bassford – 8th Battalion, 13th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery – Sergeant – 43587 – Died 10th November 1918 age 26 – Cemetery, Sutton Road, Southend – Victory and British War Medals – Son of William and Emma Bassford, 33 Perrymans Farm Road, Newbury Park, Ilford – St Mary’s Church, Langdon Hills Memorial.

Benjamin Bruce – 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry – Corporal – 7406 – Killed in action 9th September 1914 age 29 – 1914 Star, Victory and British War Medals –  Son of Joseph and Rosetta Bruce, Rose Cottage, Nightingale Avenue, Langdon Hills – La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial, France, St Nicholas Church Memorial and St Mary’s Church Memorial.

Harold Robert Clayton – C Company, 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers – Captain – Killed in action 4th June 1915 age 40 – Cemetery, Twelve Tree Copse, Turkey – 1914/15 Star, Victory and British War Medals – Brother of Rev. Guy Clayton of St Mary’s Langdon Hills – St Mary’s Church, Langdon Hills Memorial.

George Clarke Denton – 12th Indian Pioneers (Kelat-i-Ghilzie-Regiment) – Major acting Lieutenant Colonel – Died 9th October 1916 age 35 – Cemetery, Dar Es Salaam (Upange Road) Tanzania – Mention three times in dispatches, Victory and British War Medals – Son of Sir George Chardin Denton KCMG, Chigwell Row also on Electoral Roll for Gulmarg, Butlers Grove, Langdon Hills – St Mary’s Church, Langdon Hills.

Gregory Christopher Faux – 67th Battery 20th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery  Royal Field Artillery – Acting Bombadier – 93939 – Drown 21st February 1917 – Son of Joseph and Mary Faux, Chigwell Row, Romford – Mikra Memorial, Greece and St Mary’s Church Memorial, Langdon Hills.

Frank Edward Flack – 13th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps – Rifleman – R/4984 – Killed in Action 6th August 1916 age 22 – Cemetery, Delville Wood, France – Victory and British War Medals – Son of Ebenezar and Clara Flack Milton House, Nightingale Avenue, Langdon Hills.

Charles Frederick Franks – 1st Battalion, King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) – Private – 8538 – Killed in action 13th October 1914 age 27 – 1914/15 Star, Victory and British War Medals – Son of William and Elizabeth Franks, Havant Berry Lane, Langdon Hills – Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

William Edward Garrod – 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment – Private – 44030 – Killed in action 24th August 1918 age 19 – Cemetery, Becourt Military, France – Victory and British War Medals – Son of Mrs Kate Garrod, 2 Hall Cottages, Old Church Hill, Langdon Hills – St Mary’s Chyd Memorial, Bulphan.

Herbert Samuel Grant – 6th Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) – Rifleman – 2477 – Died 20th May 1916 age 21 – Cemetery, St Mary’s and All Saint’s Old Church, Langdon Hills – Victory and British War Medals – Son of Samuel and Alice Grant, Midhurst, High Road, Laindon – St Nicholas Church Memorial.

Reginald Ernest Hammond – Born Langdon Hills – 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers – Private – 25837 – Killed in action 10th August 1917 age 26 – Victory and British War Medals – Son of Thomas and Mary Hammond, Brook Cottage, Dry Street, Langdon Hills and Husband of Charlotte Hammond, 33 Aubrey Road, Walthamstow. – Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium and St Mary’s Church Memorial.

Hazell, Rowland Herbert – Born Highbury, Middlesex – Son of Georgina and the late John Hazell, husband of Jessie Hazell of ‘Hazeldene’ Gladstone Road, Langdon Hills – Private 35508 Essex Regiment 10th Battalion previously with Suffolk Regiment 31547 – Died 24/01/1918, died of wounds at home – age 29 – Buried St Nicholas Church Churchyard, Laindon – Commemorated on Langdon Hills and Laindon Roll of Honour Memorials. Ernest John Hollowbread – Born Laindon – 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment – Lance Corporal – 9194 – Killed in action 6th August 1915 age 24 – 1914/15 Star, Victory and British War Medals – Son of Mrs Sarah Spooner, Brick Cottage, Coringham – Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Questions:

1.Bassford, What is his connection to Langdon Hills?

2.Bruce, Why does he appear on both the Langdon Hills and the Laindon Roll of Honour?

3.Faux, Why does he appear on the Langdon Hills Roll of Honour, do we have the right person?

4.Garrod, Why does he also appear on the Bulphan Roll of Honour?

5.Grant, Why is he buried in St Mary’s churchyard and why is he on the on the Langdon Hills Roll of Honour?

6.Hazell, Why does he appear on the Langdon Hills Roll of Honour?

7.Hollowbread, It would appear that he was in residence at Langdon Hills when he enlisted, but where did he live?
