Coronation Day 1953

Roberts Road Street Party

I recently came across the programme for the Roberts Road Street Party to celebrate the Coronation on June 2, 1953. I was only three at the time so don’t remember anything about it but seeing the programme my first thoughts were how well it was produced and how organised the day was.

Was it unique to Roberts Road or were other programmes produced for other streets with a similar theme? We lived in the ground floor flat at number 39 with Ian and his mother, Mrs Buckle, on the first floor. My father, Henry Sargeant, was on the committee with a Mesdams Bucke which I assume is a misprint and should be Buckle. Also on the committee was Rosa Green who I think lived across the road to us.

The other thing I noticed was the 24 children from Canvey Island who were invited for the day.

  • I have no idea how many street parties took place as part of the coronation celebration but certainly Roberts Road was not unique. Somewhere in these archives are details of a similar party held on the sports field at Laindon High Road school. There must have been others.

I was working in the city at the time and intended to travel up to Fenchurch Street and find a place along the actual route. It rained all the previous day. The actual day of the coronation was pouring with rain in the morning and I gave up the idea of watching it in person. Instead I watched it on our small black and white TV. The weather cleared up a little as the day went on but everything was soaking wet.

At the LHR party they even had a troupe of horses which, along with crowds of people and stands, must have really churned up the sports field.
