Richards and Sloper Milk Delivery Services

This photograph was taken at the semi-detached farmhouse ‘Southview/Sunnymead’ on the unmade part of King Edward Road, Laindon.  It’s thought to be around the mid 20s.

In the driving seat is Mrs Elizabeth Richards.  The man holding the dog is her son James Richards Jnr.  In front of him is Sidney Sloper.   Elizabeth Richards Jnr is the passenger in the front of the car on the right.  Her sister Rose Richards is slightly behind her on the right.  In front of them is Tom Whitehead who married Rose.  The man right at the back is probably James Richards Snr. The identities of the others in the photo are unknown.

The 1910 Electoral Register shows the Sloper family living in ‘Southview’.  By 1911 they had moved to Hillcrest Farm in Railway Approach.  By 1918 they had moved to the Manor House. In Manor Road

The Richards family moved to Laindon in 1919 and lived in ‘Sunnymead’.  Both families ran milk delivery services.
