Denbigh Terrace History

Below are some overlay maps of Denbigh Road showing how the area has changed since 1949. (Click on pictures to enlarge). These were created by using the 1949 survey map and Google Earth.   Nos. 1 – 5 Denbigh Terrace are shown as Nos. 184 – 188 on the survey map.

Names of residents and their abodes as shown on the 1949 Electoral Register:-

‘Conway’ – Winifred and Charles Markham.  No. 1 Denbigh Terrace – Albert, Constance, Edward and Gladys Pinnell,  No. 2 Denbigh Terrace – Henry and Florence Sargeant plus Mary Smith.  No. 3 Denbigh Terrace – Sid and Beatrice Chester.  No. 4 Denbigh Terrace – Frank Alice and Marjorie Smith,  No 5 Denbigh Terrace – Alfred and Olive Cyster plus Violet Woodhouse.  ‘Yoker’ – Arthur and Kathleen Chapman.  ‘Ashdene’ – Edwin, William and Elizabeth Lins.  ‘Gladys’ – James and Violet Warner.  ‘Orchard Dene’ – George, John and Ethel Oliver.  ‘Peggyville’ – Thomas snr, Thomas jnr , Gladys and Lilian Brockwell.  ‘Fairview’ – Harry and Alice Clement.  ‘Lilac Cottage’ – Lilian E Le May.  ‘Sharrow’ – William and Frances Turner.

The Cyster family are recorded living in 5 Denbigh Terrace as far back as 1911 (the Census). Charles Peter Cyster and his wife Olive (née Brooker) were born in Buckinghamshire and married in 1896.

According to the dates and place of birth of their oldest two children, Charles Thomas (born Middx Sept 1897 – baptised Dec 1897 – father described as ‘Coachman’) and Bertie (born Langdon Hills 1901), Charles and Olive moved to Laindon sometime between 1898 and 1901. (Denbigh Terrace doesn’t appear on the 1898 map).

The 1901 Census shows them living at Manor Cottage Laindon.  At that time, his profession was shown as ‘jobbing gardener’.  This is a good indication that Denbigh Terrace was built sometime between 1901 and 1911.  Their other children were Olive, Alfred, Winifred and Ronald all of whom were born in Laindon.

The 1929 Kelly’s Trade Director lists Charles Peter Cyster of Laindon under ‘Estate Agents’.    Son Alfred Cyster ran the Greengrocer business.

Charles died in 1945 and his wife Olive died in 1951.

  • George and Ethel Oliver who lived in Orchard Dene were my grandparents and would be the great grand parents of Jamie Oliver.

  • Thanks Nina; good idea to add all this extra information on Denbigh Road.  It seems that the ‘Cullum’ family remains a mystery to me – as I mentioned in my article, they lived in a bungalow at the back of the fairground field, by the side of ‘Sharrow’.  Appears no mention of them.
