I recently had the pleasure of meeting Muriel Hoole in the back garden of The Haven Museum at Dunton. Muriel is the younger sister of the late Allan Young who wrote the book ‘Down the Line’ which is available to read under ‘Family Memories’ on this website.
Muriel told me of the weekends and holidays she spent as a child in ‘Lansbury’, Fourth Avenue, Dunton, the bungalow which her father Sam Young had built with his own fair hands, taking ‘Do-it-Yourself’ to its extreme. Her memories of Dunton are happy ones, especially of walking to Robinson’s farm in the mornings to collect fresh milk.
The photograph here is of the Young family from Stepney in 1950, outside ‘Lansbury’, their country retreat. Muriel is the little girl at the front in the white dress. Muriel married Bernard Hoole in 1961 and they still live just a few miles away from Dunton, in a house called ‘Lansbury’.
