Tiger Moth

PRIMROSE HILL

One of my memories of Laindon is living on Primrose Hill, the date is 30 May 1954 in a field next to the railway line where Stanway crosses the line. A Tiger Moth aircraft landed apparently on a flight from Hornchurch airfield and getting lost in low cloud and getting low on fuel made an emergency landing much to the delight of local kids.

They came from all over Laindon to see this, grown ups as well. They sent out another aircraft with some fuel, this took about two to three hours, eventually they filled the tank and off they went. Does anyone remember this, I do as it was a very exciting day and my tenth birthday.

The three lads in the photograph are from left to right John Hope, David Cordell and Fred Gurnitt with the Tiger Moth in the back ground.

Does anyone recognise the other people standing around.

  • Hi Brian.   I remember it well, it was an exciting day for us crowd. I only recognise John Hope and your brother Dave. I can’t make out any of our gang but we were all there.  Photography has improved a lot since this picture.
