These are medals won by my sister at Langdon Hills Primary School Sports Day in 1950. My sister ran the anchor leg and remembers that she took over from Natalie Williams, who’s parents ran a fish and chip shop, and the first or second leg was run by Marilyn Nightingale.

Sports day were always held in Langdon Hills Recreation Ground as the school did not have a sports field attached.

Everyone entered every event, ie; running, high jump, long jump, skipping etc and you were awarded points, probably 3 for a win, 2 for second and 1 for third, which allowed an overall winner to be selected.

My sister known in the family as Kath won every single event she entered except the high jump where she came second. When all events had been completed she thought she had not won overall so we started to walk home, but as we left the recreation ground her name was called out over the megaphone as the overall winner. She can still recall the pride of winning. Close examination of the medal shows that they were made of silver which in 1950 post war with rationing and shortages was amazing especially when in this modern world where we have far better standards of living trophies are often made of plastic or other such materials.
