Mr Miniken and a Roman Pot

Where is it now?

In 1965, my brother Dennis dug up a very old pot while working on the site of a new housing estate.  He gave it to his son Paul (my nephew) who was 13 at the time, to take to the school’s art department.  After inspection, Mr Miniken identified it as Roman and more than 1,800 years old.  An article about it appeared in the local paper.

My sister-in-law Joyce, kept a copy of the photograph which is marked 5th April 1965, but after a thorough search, hasn’t been able to find her copy of the newspaper article.  I have searched the archives at the Essex Records Office but that particular edition of the paper seems to be missing.

The pot remained on display at the school for a while, probably until around the time that Mr Miniken left the school.  It was then sent off to a museum but unfortunately, we have no record to indicate which one.  As Mr Miniken, Dennis and Paul are very sadly no longer around to ask, I will continue to try to trace the whereabouts of the pot and details of exactly where Dennis found it.  My hazy memory is telling me it was somewhere in the Wickford area but I hope eventually to find out for sure.
