Celebrating 75 years of Essex Records Office

14th September 2013

The South East Essex Community Archive Network (SEECAN) were invited to attend the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford on Saturday. The group was represented by Benfleet, Billericay, Tilbury & Chadwell and Laindon Archives. The event was an ERO Open Day to enable visitors to see the facilities and work of the department.

The groups with interest in the history of the county had their stalls in two conference rooms designated as “The Market places”. We shared our room with Canvey Archive, Beyond The Point, Essex Mills Group, The National Trust, The Essex Society for Archeology & History and the Essex branch of The Historical Association there were many more societies there to promote their groups and encourage people to enjoy all of the facilities available at the Records Office.

Dignitaries from many local areas in their manorial regalia attended together with lots of visitors see the large celebration cake being cut by the Mayor of Chelmsford.

Throughout the day visitors were able take tours around the various departments, these were very popular and fully booked and we tended to get visitors in waves prior or after a tour or lecture.

We all had a a great deal of interested people at our displays throughout the day which kept us busy and were all very tired by the end of the day but all agreed it had been a very interesting and informative day.
