Milestone

An original Mile stone
Ken Porter 2010

It appears that this stone was laid anytime between 1683 and 1823. Milestones are rapidly disappearing so we are pretty fortunate to have two on our route. There are only approximately 130 left in Essex.

The Milestone

A milestone by the road I be,
Sit ye down and rest on me,
The miles to go is shown quite clear,
Next time you pass I hope I’m here.

  • Why I did not mention it before, but this poem by Peter Pugh is Carol my wife’s second cousin. It appeared in his publication Discovering Dorset. Each poem in the book is back up with one of Peter’s sketches.
