Sidney Salt and "Langdon Hills Corn Stores"

Peter Hayden has kindly supplied this photograph of his father-in-law, Sidney W Salt as a teenager, standing outside his parents’ shop in High Road, Langdon Hills.  The shop called ‘Langdon Hills Corn Stores’ was close to Laindon Station – about the third shop before Osborne Road.  Sidney’s parents were Sidney T and Florence E Salt.  The 1929 Electoral Register shows Sidney and Florence living in “Restawhile”, Nore View Crescent.  In 1949 they were living in ‘Kilcan’ Lincewood Park Drive.

The photograph is thought to have been taken between 1930 – 1932.  In later years, the shop was a café.  Sidney W married Ivy Flemons in 1940. The 1949 Electoral Register shows them living in “Woodside” Wellington Avenue, Langdon Hills.   Their daughter Maureen married Peter Hayden in 1968.

More information can be found on the article “S. Hayden & Son. and D. Kent & Co. Laindon Builders” under ‘Areas and Places, Laindon’.

  • I lived across the road from Sid in Emanuel Road, in the mid 1990’s. He was a lovely man, he showed me the photograph above and told me about his parents shop.

  • My mum and dad were close friends to Ivy & Sid and I knew all their children Maureen, Brenda and Ronnie.  We lived in Berry Lane.
