Copies of the Basildon Standard

Barry mentioned in the comment on the article about the East Mayne underpass that he had around one hundred Basildon Standards from 1959 to 1963. This instigated the following request.

  • Hi, As part of the Carnival each year there used to be a driving competition to find Basildon’s best driver. My Grandad Charlie Davies won this in the early 1960’s. The next year the competition was due to be held again but my Grandad hadn’t returned the trophy. I remember in the Basildon Standard there was a piece titled “Where’s Charlie” with a photo of him holding the trophy. He returned it and won the competition again! I’d like to locate the article.

  • I used to go to Dance School…Tap and Ballet….in a small hut at the back of a Hairdressers opposite Nightingale Parade. We held a show in the Laindon High Road school and I remember it was packed and an article appeared in the Recorder, the heading was something like…. Two(!) Year Old Steals The Show. That would have been my little sister Susan Fordham, I believe this to be 1957-58-59.

  • Hello Irene.  Another member of the Archive has located a copy of your wedding photo which was published in the Laindon Recorder 7th November 1962.  I have forwarded this to you by email.  Best Wishes.

  • I’ve just heard back from Barry Ellerby.  He has looked through his copies of Basildon Standard but unfortunately he doesn’t have the edition that covers 27th October 1962.  Sorry to disappoint you.

  • About Barry Ellerby’s  copies of the Basildon Standard, did they ever get to be digitised to be inserted onto this site? I’m sure I and many others would be delighted to see them. Don.

  • Hi. If you go along to The British Library REFERENCE DIVISION NEWSPAPER LIBRARY Colindale Avenue, London, NW9 5HE you can search through every paper that has ever been printed, and get copies of anything of interest, I know I’ve gone through all the Basildon papers of 1960/1/2.

Allow yourself a day at least. Please check before you go as I did this in 1985, the system may have changed

  • Hi Andrea, I’m sorry I do not have one single copy of September 62, I wished I could have helped. There are so many wedding photos and articles of people from Laindon they are fascinating.

I would like to load all my pictures on to the site but I don’t really understand how to do it I have so much to put on I need some help.
