Kings Road

Hi do any of the contributors to the site live in Kings Road. Has it been re-named Steeple View? I had a look at the Property Reviews on the net, can only find a couple under Steeple View, Kings Rd. I lived there in the 1950s. Concrete surface at the top, Arterial Rd end, grass & ruts at the Dunton Rd end. I would be grateful for any info. Regards Ken Elliott

  • Just been looking at Kings Crescent by Google Maps. certainly has changed a lot! I see houses down the side where the rough scrubland used to be, with a big fence up by the Arterial, something to do with Noise Abatement? No sign of James Garage, but the other one is now Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

  • Laying in bed this morning, thinking about Jimmy & Alfie. Suddenly remember, while Jimmy was doing his National Service, we heard a message from him to his family on a Radio programme especially for the Armed Forces. My Mum sent me across the road to see if his folks were listening. Funny how these little things stick in ones mind!

  • Hi Ken. The map is very useful. I don’t remember visiting my Aunt and Uncle Burton when I was a child, so it is good to see exactly where their bungalow ‘The Bungalow’ had stood. Do you remember my Uncle Cyril’s large Collie dog called ‘Lassy’ or ‘Laddy’? He brought him/her round to our bungalow once about 1961 and I was amazed to hear that he/she was 18 years old – a very good age for a dog. I didn’t see Uncle Cyril again for many years, until the early nineties in fact and there’s quite a story involving our meeting at that time.

I’ve heard a few stories about Jimmy and Alfie. My sister told me they were still quite young when she last saw them and at that time they were playing with a wasp’s nest. I also heard that an irate lady once knocked on Aunt Flo’s door and said that Jimmy and Alfie had stolen her nanny goat. She sent her away with a flea in her ear. Some while later Aunt Flo heard bleating, so looked out the window and saw a nanny goat tethered in her back garden!

My sister Anne Burton, lives in Harleston, about 30 miles from you as the crow flies (about 44 miles by road).

  • Well Nina, I certainly remember Laddie the collie. But the goat? Now I wonder where they found her!

  • Kings Road definitely still exists (I had an Uncle and Aunt who lived there from 1934 in “The Bungalow” – Cyril and Florence Burton. They lived opposite the Stapleton family. I have a cousin who still lives there). Steeple View is the name of the area which covers, Kings Road, Kings Crescent, Queen’s Road, Chesham Drive, Latimer Drive etc.

Editor: Google Earth Street View is an excellent way to check out how our streets and roads look today.

  • Hello Nina, I knew your Aunt & Uncle, and their two boys, Jimmy & Alfie. Is it one of the boys who still lives there? In the same bungalow? I lived just down the road from them, on the other side. I guess the roads are all made up now! Regards

  • It’s Jimmy who is still in Kings Road, but these days he lives in a semi-detached house and the road is all made up. Alfie lives elsewhere in the area. Jimmy and his wife Veronica celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008. There’s a photo that was taken at their party on this website. You will find it under “Family Memories, The Burton Family”, my sister Anne wrote an article called “Memories of Laindon”. The 7th photo down shows Jimmy and Alfie with my sister Anne and myself. I hope you find it okay on the article list. Best wishes.

  • Just been looking at Google Earth, as Editor suggests. Found Kings Rd. Really amazing seeing it how it is after 60 odd years. Chesham Drive is new to me, it used to be a footpath, leading to the bottom of Queens St. Alfie Burton lived on the corner of this footpath, our house was just about opposite. On a broader view, all lovely new houses where our old Asbestos bungalow stood. I see the entrance to Kings Rd from the Arterial Rd is no more, one has to enter from Dunton Rd. nowadays.

  • Hello Nina, I found the picture. The boys certainly look a bit different to what I remember! Regards to them when you see them.
