The Church on the Hill - St Nicholas

St Nicholas has stood on its little hill top overlooking the parish of Laindon for nearly 800 years. It is a Grade One building and the local school ‘James Hornsby’ is named after the last school teacher who taught at the church for 48 years. We get many visitors who turn up to either admire the church or the view. The churchyard we believe is the largest in the borough and many of Laindon’s prominent people/families from the past are buried there.

In recent years it has won the Essex best kept Churchyard Competition and come second twice, but this year has been a struggle with the weather and dwindling voluntary helpers but we feel that our gardens are just as beautiful.

Where we do need help is looking after the 13 First and Second World War Commonwealth War Graves, if you feel you could adopt one or two, please call up on a Tuesday or Saturday morning and speak to one of the volunteers.

  • It’s lovely to hear St Nicholas is still cared for by the local community. My parents were married there is 1940. After WW2 they migrated to Australia. Mum returned in the 70’s for the blessing of a stained glass window damaged during the war years. Sue Bulters Canberra Aust.

  • As a recent new volunteer helping to keep Mother Nature in check with the Church grounds, I am proud alongside my fellow volunteers to help keep this wonderful local Church, which is part of Basildon’s coat of arms insignia looking as well as we can.

  • Like Brian Baylis, I am not a religious person and have always liked St. Nicholas church. Having grown up in its shadow, so to speak, living at the bottom of the hill, it has always been a feature of the area. No matter how big Basildon grew or how many towns or villages it engulfed in doing so, St. Nic’s has remained a landmark that screams out, THIS IS LAINDON !

  • Despite not being religious, I have always liked St. Nic’s, and even my sister was married there back in 1963. To me this will always be a special building in Laindon.

Beautiful photo with beautiful sky Ken.
