The Church on the Hill - St Nicholas
St Nicholas has stood on its little hill top overlooking the parish of Laindon for nearly 800 years. It is a Grade One building and the local school ‘James Hornsby’ is named after the last school teacher who taught at the church for 48 years. We get many visitors who turn up to either admire the church or the view. The churchyard we believe is the largest in the borough and many of Laindon’s prominent people/families from the past are buried there.
In recent years it has won the Essex best kept Churchyard Competition and come second twice, but this year has been a struggle with the weather and dwindling voluntary helpers but we feel that our gardens are just as beautiful.
Where we do need help is looking after the 13 First and Second World War Commonwealth War Graves, if you feel you could adopt one or two, please call up on a Tuesday or Saturday morning and speak to one of the volunteers.
