Bill Tucker

I have just stumbled upon the article on a ‘Surfeit of Butchers’ when researching my family history.

My great grandfather was Bill Tucker who ran the butchers shop in the picture. My grandparents were Gwen Rust (nee Tucker) and Alf Rust. Wondered if anyone knows why the Tuckers came down to Laindon from Islington? Thanks in advance of any help!

  • My grandparents were Bill Tucker and his wife Maud, had butcher shops in Laindon High Road and Wash Road, Laindon and Pitsea. Alf and Gwen Rust were my Aunt and Uncle and indeed had clothing shops in Pitsea and Basildon. My two uncles Bill and Richard Tucker inherited the butcher shops when their parents died.

I don’t really know why they came to that area from Islington, but when I was a child my grandparent lived in a bungalow named “Kiapara” on the Arterial Road, Laindon.  I believe that they lived there prior to my birth in 1943.

  • Julie refers to her grandparents as Gwen and Alf Rust. Would this be the Alf Rust who had a clothing store on Pitsea Broadway and later moved to the Basildon centre selling mainly leather clothing?
