  • I used to do a paper round for Pollards back in the late 1950s and the shop was on the Arterial Road (A127) only a few doors to the east from Pound Lane. My paper round used to take me down Wash Road from Church Road, along Dunton Road to Carvers Farm back and up Rectory Road to the farm just before St Mary’s Church, Little Burstead, back down Rectory Road, turning left I think into Essex Road or is it New Road before turning right down the Chase and back out onto Dunton Road.

    By Kenneth Porter (16/02/2020)
  • Hi Donald I am sure that pollards shop was in Church Road which later was Swifts’ Motor Cycles shop. David is still around but he changed his name back to his name before he was adopted. I saw him and spoke to him and he said he lost touch with his sister as they did not get on.

  • Just had a look at the picture. No. 66 is me Tony Gray, not Barry Keeble.
    Thanks Tony.

    By Tony Gray (31/03/2019)
  • No 51 is John Bronsdon who sat beside me in 4×2.

    By Richard Schmieg (27/12/2018)
  • No. 66 verified by himself is Barry Keeble

    By Don Joy (26/01/2018)
  • Thanks Nina (again), didn’t know if I imagined it or remembered his name from primary school. Age related confusion.

    By Donald Joy (06/11/2015)
  • Tom Durrant started at LHR in January 1959 the term after this photograph was taken.

    By Richard Haines (06/11/2015)
  • I might be wrong (nothing new), but I seem to recall a teacher, Mr. Durrant, that I can’t see in these pictures. Anyone help ?

    By Donald Joy (05/11/2015)
  • Mr Durrant didn’t start at the school until after this photograph was taken. (The photo was taken in October 1958).

    By Nina Humphrey(née Burton) (05/11/2015)
  • No. 7  Malcolm Lowe.

    By Roger Waveney (09/09/2015)
  • Hi Donald.  Sorry but the Pollards had the shop in Church Road first, then moved to the A127 London bound.  I am not sure but their shop on the A127 might still be there, there is a building on A127  and also David had a sister called Barbara, he is still living in Laindon I see him sometimes.

    By Alan Taylor (08/09/2015)
  • Alan, I don’t mind being wrong, I’ve spent a lifetime perfecting it! Dave was my idol in my teens, the suits he wore were an inspiration to me and from the time I got one of his cast off suits I then had all my suits handmade. Boy did I look good (I thought so anyway).

    By Donald Joy (08/09/2015)
  • No. 21 is David Pollard.  His parents  had a newsagents in Pound Lane, which later became Swifts Motor Cycles.

    By Alan Taylor (07/09/2015)
  • Alan, you’re right that is Dave Pollard but his parent’s newsagents shop was on the A127 Arterial Road London bound side just before the end of Pound Lane. Swifts Motorcycles was in Church Road A127 end.

    By Donald Joy (07/09/2015)
  • No. 17 is Peter Myers, who lived in the High Road, opposite Holst Avenue, who moved to Woodlands School when his family moved to Pinmill, Basildon.

    By Dave Pritchard (12/04/2013)
  • Hi Brian yes David Jackson had the nickname Porky and Keith was known as Beefy in those days . Just a play on words I guess . Happy days roaring around the fields opposite their house I think Keith had a BSA 500 but he might remember exactly which one . He was then going to get a T100 but I don’t know if he did as I moved from Laindon in 63. By the way I met up with Gloria Sewell in March but no Fred – he was on holiday, typical, I’ll just wait another 50 years .

    By Richard Haines (01/04/2013)
  • Hi Richard. David Jackson’s nickname was porky?  No. 22, know the face, knew him well but his name escapes me.  Thanks for info on speed way track. Brian

    By Brian cordell (30/03/2013)
  • Yes, I recall that Tony Maclin was a friend of David Jackson who is next to him on this photo and David was brother of my mate Keith Jackson who does work on this website, hows it going Keith? All were interested in motorcycles back in the day.

    By Richard Haines (29/03/2013)
  • No 23 Tony Maclin worked at Dougie Vito motor cycle shop

    By Brian Cordell (27/03/2013)
  • This page contains a comment from Terry Rattenbury 08/01/12. This name struck a chord in my memory as I knew a person of the the same name who lived in the Waverley Rd. area and was well known as a hypnotist and spent some time appearing at music halls. Would this have been Terry’s father?

    By W.H.Diment (23/02/2013)

  • I remember the slipper episode so so well, it was I think just after Mr Wanstall tore up my exercise book and hurled the remnants accross the classroom. I think it was class 2b, anyone confirm, it was in the science room SE corner of the quad block. I dont think he liked my writing!!!!!

    By Steve White (14/02/2012)
  • 10 = Charlie Claise (we slippered each other in front of class of Mr Wanstell – Science). 16= Robert Gray (Tylers Ave). 29=DEANO

  • Hi Thelma, I’m well still living in Australia thinking of more names, faces are good but names are all mixed as its been 50 years. Hope there is a 50th reunion, then i’ll come over.

    By Ken Marchant (02/12/2011)

    By Ken Marchant (28/11/2011)
  • Hi Andrea regards, Roger bought me a box of chocs into school and we all ate them. I then packed him in lol.  I hope hes not on here :-)

By the way what class were you in?

By Patsy Spendlove née Roper (27/11/2011)
  • I think No 47 is Victor Byatt, No 64 is Michael Hawks, No 63 is David Leonard.

By Thelma Young (nee Talbot) (27/11/2011)
  • No.47 Victor Byatt, my first boyfriend. No.10 Charlie Clace.

By Shirley Thompson née Talbot (27/11/2011)
  • Hi Patsy, see page 4, number 39, the only prefect not in uniform! Class 4X & 5X, left in 1959. Remember being at a dance with your brother Kenny; we were larking about and I ended up off my chair and on the floor.

By Andrea Ash (nee Pinnell) (27/11/2011)
  • No 55 is definitely Roger English he was my first boyfriend at age 11 lol 😉

By Patsy Spendlove née Roper (24/11/2011)
  • Sorry, having trouble with the numbers – Roger English is immediately below Victor Blackwell who is number 43. Patsy – a smile for you! Your first boyfriend Roger visited my house in the 1970’s to carry out some artex work – my usually mild natured dog didn’t like him – Roger stood at the door dressed completely in black leather!

Editor: Number 55 is the lad hiding behind number 63, sorry but some of them did not want to be seen.

By Andrea Ash (nee Pinnell) (24/11/2011)
  • Number 2 isn’t Mick Maloney as he is rightfully on page 8 no 5. I think not only is my brain scrambled but the eyesight has gone too.

    By Norman Styles (16/11/2011)
  • 24 David Jackson, my brother

    By Keith Jackson (15/11/2011)
  • I wish to correct number 34 on here to me, then I am sure number 65 is David Ross as I knew him

    By Brian Baylis (14/11/2011)
  • Does anyone else think that the lad beneath Victor Blackwell could be Roger English (number 54) (Gillian’s brother) ?

By Andrea Ash (Nee Pinnell) (14/11/2011)
  • No 2 Mick Maloney???

    By Norman Styles (13/11/2011)
  • Hello Nina, I read the number wrong for John Blackwell. The no. above his head is 48. If that is his no. he is 48 not 60 which is to the side of him.

    By Brenda Mason (Lewis) (13/11/2011)
  • Nina, could no. 60 be John Blackwell?

    By Brenda Mason (Lewis) (12/11/2011)
  • Renumbering: Clive Strong (dark haired) is now 39 (not 37). Stephen White (dark haired too) is now 40 (not 38). Alan Daniels is now 41 (not 39).

By Andrea Ash (Nee Pinnell) (11/11/2011)
  • Re Victor Blackwell’s younger brother (big smile) – he has 48 on top of his head and 60 on left, so not sure now?

Editor: the numbers in that section refer to the heads below 60 is the round faced demur youngster 48 the lad with the smile.

By Andrea Ash (Nee Pinnell) (11/11/2011)
  • Gday, 28 Robert Bugg? 29 Micheal Dean.

    By Nina Burton (07/11/2011)
  • No. 14 is now Michael Page No. 33. Michael Roache

    By Nina Burton (07/11/2011)
  • I think no. 62 is Alan Eames

    By valerie Kingsley (Boatwright) (07/11/2011)
  • Rich look at the ears I think that Dave Gowlett is no 36. Do you not think that your minds eye has just moved along a bit, because 35 also looks like Mick Jagger to me??

    By valerie Kingsley (Boatwright) (07/11/2011)
  • Val, yeah, the editor played around with the numbers (his perogative of course) and now we have 35 Alan Jagger and 36 Dave Gowlett instead of whatever it was before. Also 34 looks like Alan’s brother David Jagger, can anyone verify this please?

Editor: Sorry for the for the inconvenience, but as I mentioned the other day, I had to change the numbers due to a mixup when I inserted them on the photographs originally.
