  • No 8 is Melvin Eldrige (99% certain) No 44 Dafydd Gwydre Anthony (DGA) was my class teacher for 2 years. I thought he was an excellent teacher, even though I never learnt to spell his Christian names correctly. He went to Singapore in 1960/61 to become a headmaster and I never heard of him again

    By Nina Burton (04/12/2011)
  • I didn’t know Ronnie married Tina (knew they went out together). I do know that Christine Arthey was married to Ronnie but not now.

    By Andrea (03/12/2011)
  • Hi Nina, I thought that Yvonne was younger then Ted and they lived in Home-Mead, same as me (phone box King Edward Road) No 26 is Colin Markin

    By Ken Marchant (02/12/2011)
  • Hi Ken. I’ve just checked the records and you are absolutely right, Ted was born 1947 and Yvonne December 1951 (the same year and month as my younger brother Alan!). I remember now, the girl who lived in Devonshire Road (turn right at top of King Edward Road was Pat Bartley). I remember the phone box very well and used it many times Best wishes.

    By Nina Burton (02/12/2011)
  • Quite right Nina, her bother was Young Georgie Bartley and next door to them on the right was the Brooks (Pat and Linda) family till appox 1953 then the Brewers (Tina and Evelyn) then the Billingtons. Maureen Venables lived to the left but not sure if it was right next door to Pat and Georgie or not. A little bit info, on the Winston club page there is a photo of Georgie Bartley Senior Pat and Georgies dad. The red phone box, press button A press button B, had the best mirror in for me to put on and take off my make up so dad would not know I wore it. Linda’s house in Devonshire was one of the ones that backed on to my onion field. I will never forget Alfie he was the first boy I sat next to in Markhams Chase School approx. 1949. Later on in life I looked after one of his children when I lived in Pitsea for a short time approx. 1971, I can’t recall the child’s name at the moment but it will come to me.

    By Gloria Sewell (02/12/2011)
  • Gloria. Linda Bartley and I were in the same class and stood next to each other in Markham’s Chase school choir. I enjoyed being with her as she was good company and very entertaining. When we started school in 1951 she was living with her family in ‘Morningside’ in Laindon High Road. When they soon moved to a new house in Devonshire Road. I remember Linda telling me that their new living room was ‘as big as a dance hall’. I was very saddened when I heard of her death, RIP dear Linda. Now this gets a bit complicated:- my older brother Dennis had a friend called Ronnie Graves. Ronnie had two half sisters called Maureen and Pat Perry. About 1960 when I was 14, Dennis and his wife Joyce gave a house party, Maureen, who was about 16, was there with Alfie Bartley who she was courting. It went on to the early hours and as everybody stayed over, Maureen and I had to sleep in the same bed. Maureen and Alfie married in 1961. I think their daughter Joanne was born 1965. I don’t remember who lived in Devonshire Road much before 1953 as I was too young, but do you remember the Andrews family who lived at No 78, next to the Venables? Betty, the youngest was another of my classmates. There was a boy along there called Micky Page, who my mum told me only had a birthday every four years as he was a leap year baby. I didn’t understand what she meant until I discovered he was born on 29th February. You mentioned Tina Brewer, she married Ron Theobald who lived in Powell Road. His younger sister Valerie was another of my classmates. After the Crew family moved from 68 King Edward Road (on the corner), the Clark family moved in – Gordon Clark was another of my classmates.

    By Nina Burton (02/12/2011)
  • Oh good, at last somebody who remembers his first name. I could only remember his surname! I’m pretty sure he had an older sister called Yvonne. They lived in Devonshire Road (top of King Edward Road and turn right). Their cousins lived further along Devonshire Road to the south, Lily, Alfie, Linda and Rose Bartley. I was in the same class as Linda who very sadly died a few years ago.

    By Nina Humphrey(nee Burton) (29/11/2011)
  • 71 is Ted Bartley

    By Ken Marchant (28/11/2011)
  • Could no.3 be Barry Daniels. His father had the shoe repair shop in the High Road.

By Shirley Thompson née Talbot (27/11/2011)

    By Jim Quinton (17/11/2011)
  • Number 55 (page 9) could be a brother to number 48 on page 10?

By Andrea Ash (nee Pinnell) (16/11/2011)
  • HY, 21 Dennis Hyatt.

    By Ken Page (07/11/2011)
  • Number 34 is John Ward.

Re teachers Mr Finch took wood work in my days, “Pecker” Mr Seaman was metalwork I believe, he wasn’t too happy if you threw iron filings into the forge as they erupted into sparks, quite exciting for twelve year olds.

    By Ken Page (07/11/2011)
  • I’ve noticed a change in the numbering – there’s no longer a No. 58. I can now confirm that No. 52 is Anthony Trew and No. 54 is Brian Clement.

    By Nina Burton (07/11/2011)
  • Richard I don’t want to be rude, just curious, but which one did we call Mr Peck because of the size of his nose was it Mr Finch.

    By Gloria Sewell (06/11/2011)
  • Hi Gloria, youre so naughty, this is why I always got Finch and Seaman mixed up. Definitely Mr Seaman took us for Technical Drawing and his favourite saying was ‘that boy there, get your pencil on the paper and draw’. I cant do the accent but you get the picture. 100% the pecker. There was a new building at the back of the school then which housed the metalwork workshops, woodwork room and technical drawing sections. Certainly Messrs Finch, Seaman and Foley were stationed in there but I dont recall having been taught by Mr Finch, I always wondered what he did. Whatever, it was brilliant training for boys going in to engineering like me and of course Fred as well. No drawing on paper now though, it just comes out of the plotter.

    By Richard Haines (06/11/2011)
  • Re..Mr.Peck.. Hi Gloria, yes you are right, the Teacher concerned was Mr. Seaman, and was given the nick name Pecker, because of his large pointed nose..

    By Eddie Lewis (06/11/2011)
  • AND!!!!!! who do you think greeted him as such on first meeting him, can’t think who told me to I think it might have been my aunty Marion. She was always such fun.

    By Gloria Sewell (06/11/2011)
