VE Day - 75th Anniversary

When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. A three-day international celebration was to take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020. It was going to be an opportunity for all of us to remember the enormous sacrifice that were made at home and abroad and to joyously celebrate as people did 75 years ago on the arrival of peace in Europe.
Unfortunately, we are currently fighting an invisible war – The Coronavirus emergency – The Government has naturally advised that all VE Day 75 community celebrations be cancelled. It is right and proper that people should be kept safe and heathy.
Saying that, it is still possible to take part in the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ at 3pm on the 8th May from the safety of their own home by standing up and raising a glass of refreshment and undertake the following ‘Toast’ – ‘To those who gave so much, we thank you’.
One of those heroes was Laindon man Don Sheppard who will be 100 on the 4th May, so a glass also to Don would not go amiss.
If you look on our site you will find photographs and articles on the various parties that were held in Laindon and district in 1945 – Westley Road, Worthing Road, Berry Lane, Basildon Drive and Sandringham Road. – I have added here another five. – Keep Safe –
