Remembrance Sunday 12th November 2023

It was another excellent turnout at 3pm for this year’s Remembrance Day Service at the Laindon War Memorial. It was a very moving service and the weather held off. Flags waved in the breeze as the bugler played ‘The Last Post’. This was followed up as usually with refreshments organised by Swan Housing in a nearby marquee erected especially for the service – We thank them –
Wreaths were laid on behalf of: – John Baron MP. Basildon Council Political Parties (Conservatives-Labour-Independence), British Legion, Essex Police, Laindon Community Centre, Basildon District Scouts, Royal Navel Reserves, Merchant Navy, Swan Housing/Sanctuary, Basildon Heritage, Basildon Twinning, Basildon Round Table, Laindon and District Community, St Nicholas Church and our Ukrainian friends.
I addition there were wreaths from members of the public including several floral displays and crosses. Lincewood Junior and Millhouse Junior Schools had made an early visit laying wreaths.
Remembrance Day services on Remembrance Sunday across the country are held at 11am. Ours is held at 3pm, a little unique you may say but just in case you do not know this is due to the fact that the Memorial was unveiled in 1935 at 3pm, because the local Rector of Laindon-cum-Basildon Rev. M N Lake had a morning service to attend. So, our Remembrance Service has been held at 3pm ever since.

Kohima epitaph:
“When you go home, Tell them of us and say, For your Tomorrow, We gave our today.”
