My Laindon Life

Dave Tuting

I miss my life in Laindon.
I grew up in Bramley Gardens, just off Tavistock Road, after my dad became part of a self build group, Basildex Homes, back in the 60’s. We had a fabulous life there, all the families, 20, became our Aunts and Uncles. The kids were all our cousins and best friends.
We had parties and there were no animosities, that I remember.
Myself and Steve Belcher were known as Batman and Robin as we dressed up based on our heroes of the day and ran around trying to right wrongs! Oh how I long for those days again!
The days of innocence, wonder and fun!
Once at ‘big school’, I met a girl who I expected to be my soul partner for the rest of my life, Mary Lynch. She amazed me. one time, after mentioning that I loved the ‘shaggy dog’ hairdo which was favoured at the time, she showed up at school with her hair just like that!
We split a few years later and then met up whilst she was involved with the Guides and I with the Scouts and got back together. We saw each other for a few months, during which time I had decided to propose and be with her for the rest of my life, but, for reasons unbeknownst to me, being young and naive, she left me. Broke my heart in two. My love had gone.
I then joined the army, left Laindon, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I’d love to know where her life went and if we may see each other again some time.

P.S. Does anyone remember a gym up near Basildon Hospital back in the 80’s?
