Parish Magazine July 1943

I know a couple of these have already been submitted but as this is a different year I thought it might still be of interest

  • I was interested to see my sister, Rosalie (Rosa) Stickland, listed under baptisms. Once again our surname is mis-spelt as Strickland. This happens all the time. Which is strange as Strickland is the less common name. An uncle of mine has this mis-spelling on his war grave. He was killed in Flanders in 1916 at the age of 21. The mis-spelling made it difficult to find his details.

  • Just to continue a topic mentioned elsewhere, I notice that advertisements for Cottis and Rawley still use High Street, Laindon for their address. As the year is 1943, I wonder when the High Road was officially known as such ? Also by this time I might have expected to see telephone numbers of just 2 digits phased out. Were Laindoners a little slow to acquire the new fangled technology of the time?
